  • As I write this 2011 is only a few weeks old, but I suspect this may well be a contender for my album of the year.  “Irie Up” UK
  • It’s difficult to single out individual tracks as each has its merits and together they form what is an extremely captivating, inspirational yet humbling album, one which has clearly been made from the heart.  "UK Reggae Guide"

"Answer Your Calling" Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk (Beautiful Roots Reggae!!!)

Oahu, Hawaii-born Joshua Alo's music is a contemporary Bob Marley influenced conscious roots reggae, tempered with his own gentle acoustic guitar and sometimes African sounding ukulele, creating a mellow masterpiece. He has a firm but tender voice which is well suited to his messages of praise for Jah and love for mankind. In the spirit of unity he recorded this in Venice, Italy with some excellent local musicians - and the result is some wonderful, distinctive and uplifting reggae music.

It's very rare that I come across an album that I know is good only after the first listening session. It is even more rare when this is combined with the fact that I know none of the recording artists, but Joshua Alo's debut left me in awe. Answer Your Calling is best described as an offering from the heart. The incredibly honest rhythm section is a true driving force. A mean, thundering bass combined with well placed heavy drum licks, rootical percussion, seventies organ sounds, guitar and hovering above that are Joshua Alo's angelic breathy vocals and ukulele.

Beautifully arranged and produced. It is a part of the Chaplains musical library and brothers are lining up to check it out. The soothing, relaxing affect it had on me was definitely needed. I guess loving, spiritual words combined with acoustic guitar and sounds of nature are exactly what the doctor ordered, an excellent piece of work. Reggae Reviews.com (Massive Rating!)

"It's not often you hear reggae albums from enlisted soldiers; I dare say Joshua Alo's is the first! A member of the United States Air Force, Alo has lived all around the world but was born and raised on Oahu, Hawaii, and he brings that tropical sound to his debut album, Answer Your Calling. This is "hammock music": swaying, peaceful, and gorgeous, suited for sunset on a secluded beach, whether you're in the mood for love or for meditation."

"Answer Your Calling is a very impressive debut album, showcasing the exciting talents of Joshua Alo. Some people may raise an eyebrow and question the validity of a US soldier's involvement in the roots genre, but I feel the music speaks for itself and I would suggest that you approach this release with an open mind – you won't be disappointed."

"Alo’s songs are mellow and meditative, his vocals direct and committed, and the whole album glows with an  unpretentious, spiritual aura that’s entirely infectious. He may wear a military uniform, but Joshua Alo’s true calling is that of a peaceful reggae messenger. And he answered it well." Read More

UK's Rock-n-Reel
"Joshua Alo has created a beautifully mellow CD with a dozen original tracks of musically laid-back and lyrically inspirational acoustic based sounds. His voice suits his material, which is often prefaced and/or punctuated by quite lengthy passages of his own sometimes quite bluesy acoustic guitar before the band comes in with a one-drop in the vein of vintage Bob Marley."

"These well produced onedrop reggae tracks have a nice authentic organ sound that compliments Alo's acoutic playing. Vocally he reminds me of Jamaican singer Yvad, with a lite R&b soul style. Twelve songs of love, light and hope makes for an inspirational package. If you like smooth easy listening music with a message, then you'll enjoy this."

"Alo has the talent and potential to rise in the reggae world, tempered by honesty and humility. This is not only commendable but inspiring for listeners searching for examples of truthfulness and authenticity in Babylon, where examples as such are not always easy to find"

"Beautiful rootical flavored tunes, underpinned by a slow and traditional one drop reggae beat. "Answer Your Calling" is a convincing set showing that Joshua Alo is a promise for the future."

Keanu Agbayani - Poet
From Irie's feel good mood to the last track on the album, Joshua finds a way to captivate our minds with the cultivation of our dreams through inspirational ballads such as Answer Your Calling, and Faith. Although classified under roots reggae, the genre in which he falls under could be better described as simply conscious music; music for the mind, body and soul. Blessed as a beautiful song writer his greatest attribute is his one of a kind voice that grabs your attention which in turn grasps your mind. He masterfully balances the album switching from uplifting songs of the human inner tribulation such as Stand Firm to heart melting love songs such as Dreaming. Living in a world filled with so much negativity and tyranny; Joshua's album Answer Your Calling is a refreshing wake up call to get up off of your sorrows and LIVE!
